SPRINGFIELD — A hit-and-run crash has required thousands of residents to boil their drinking water until further notice.

The white tractor-trailer with a red logo on the side pulled into the Speedway gas station at Urbana and Moorefield roads about
7:25 p.m. Tuesday. As it exited the station onto Moorefield Road, the vehicle’s rear wheels ran over a fire hydrant, breaking it off and causing it to leak thousands of gallons of water across the lawn, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver did not stop after striking the hydrant. Investigators are analyzing surveillance footage from the gas station to locate the driver.

Meanwhile, 3,500 residents of Moorefield Twp. remain under a boil advisory until at least 3:30 p.m. today while water samples are analyzed in accordance with Ohio Environmental Protection Agency rules, said Clark County Emergency Management Agency Director Lisa D’Allessandris.

Water should be boiled before it is used for drinking, brushing teeth and food preparation, she said.

“The rule of thumb is anything you are going to ingest, make sure to boil it,” D’Allessandris said.

Four Northeastern schools — Northridge Elementary and Middle, Rolling Hills Elementary and Kenton Ridge High schools — were under a two-hour delay Wednesday as officials prepared for the advisory. Water coolers were brought in to replace drinking fountains and for use in food preparation. Staff members have been advised to sanitize their hands after washing them, said Louis Kramer, district superintendent.

“We are planning on this being at least a two-day event and making sure that we have enough water and have made adjustments to our lunch schedule appropriately,” Kramer said.

Anyone with information on the crash should contact the sheriff’s office at (937) 328-2560.
