SPRINGFIELD — The city of Springfield has reached a contract agreement with one of its police unions.
City commissioners approved the agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police union representing 17 police clerks and parking control attendants on Tuesday, March 16.
The previous contract expired at the end of February. The new agreement will go into effect immediately upon signing, which will likely be next week, Personnel Director Jeff Rodgers said.
The one-year contract calls for no across-the-board raises. Those eligible for step raises will still receive them, Rodgers said.
Longevity, which already is a two-tiered system based on hire date, will be bumped up slightly. For those hired before March 1, 2006, the bonus will go from $97.50 per year of service to $100 per year of service. For those hired after March 1, 2006, the bonus is half that.
The cap on the city’s contribution to monthly dental premiums also will increase from $25 to $30.
Employees will continue to pay 10 percent of their health insurance premiums.
The FOP leader couldn’t be reached for comment.
Several other city unions also have accepted no across-the-board wage increases in recent contracts and non-union employees also won’t receive raises.
The budget is extremely stressed, Rodgers said.
“We appreciate every unit that has done this ... Obviously we hope times are going to get better,” he said.
