Jackey Arrington is hoping voters see the value in the Champaign County Senior Center this fall.
In November, the center will be asking voters to approve a five-year renewal levy that provides about $110,000 a year for operating expenses, including salaries, maintenance and helps cover the general costs of running the center each year.
“We don’t receive any federal funding,” said Arrington, director of the Champaign County Senior Center. “We rely on this funding and the income it brings in.”
The Champaign County commissioners voted to approve placing the 0.2-mill levy on the ballot during a meeting earlier this month. Because it is a renewal levy, it will not result in new taxes for residents. According to information from the Champaign County Auditor’s Office, the owner of a $100,000 home pays about $6 a year for the levy.
Arrington said while the levy does expire this year, if it is not renewed, the senior center still collects on the levy through next year.
“This is the first time on the ballot and we’re hoping this time will do it,” Arrington said.
Along with offering free meals for seniors once a week on Tuesdays, Arrington said the center also offers a variety of mental and physical activities for its members.
