DAYTON — Save your party hats from New Year’s Eve. The U.S. Census Bureau is coming to town, bringing a road show that includes a cargo van called Statistics, a pull trailer filled with all things census and — job opportunities.

The 2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour will be rolling to a stop at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Dayton Local Census Office, 4004 Woodcliff Ave. An open house and ribbon-cutting will begin at 1:30 p.m., with Montgomery County Commissioner Dan Foley, Dayton City Commissioner Nan Whaley, Greene County Commissioner Marilyn Reid and other officials participating.

The road tour will then head to Springfield for a similar event Thursday, Jan. 6, at the local census office in the Historic Bushnell Building at 14 East Main Street, where the open house will begin at
9 a.m. The Springfield Local Census Office is responsible for field operations in Champaign, Clark, Darke, Delaware, Fayette, Logan, Madison, Miami, Preble, Shelby and Union counties.

The Dayton office is responsible for field operations in Montgomery and Greene counties.

One big draw of the event: Job seekers will be able to speak to recruiters about upcoming census positions and schedule their tests, according to a press release from the bureau.

Visitors will also be able to learn about “the positive impact that the 2010 Census will have on their community,” the release states.

The 2010 Census, which will begin in April, is a count of everyone living in the United States. By law, everyone in the country — both citizens and non-citizens — must be counted every 10 years. The results are used to reapportion congressional seats to states, and will directly affect how more than $400 billion every year is distributed to state, local and tribal governments.

The Census Bureau says the 2010 form is one of the shortest in history and takes about 10 minutes to complete. By law the bureau is forbidden from sharing individual answers with anyone, including federal and law enforcement agencies.
