SPRINGFIELD — What if one bowl of soup could feed a family of four for four days?
That is what will happen each time someone buys a bowl of soup during the 16th annual Empty Bowls event to be held Thursday, March 25, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at Wittenberg University’s Student Center.
For $15, individuals can purchase a hand-crafted bowl and enjoy a salad and soup donated by local restaurants. The proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank which supplies food pantries throughout Clark, Champaign and Logan counties.
The price of each bowl is approximately the amount it costs Second Harvest Food Bank to feed a family of four for four days through the food pantries it supplies, said Regional Director Keith Williamson.
Wittenberg students began throwing the nearly 900 one-of-a-kind bowls last year. Second Harvest hopes to bring in a total of $30,000 — topping last year’s goal of $27,000, said Events and Emergency Assistance Coordinator Anna Plataniotis.
“They can come and fill their bowl and take it home as a reminder that there are empty bowls in the community,” she said.
Sodexho food service is the primary sponsor of the event along with Linardo’s Villa, Bob Evans and Season’s restaurants. Clark State Community College culinary students will also prepare a soup for the meal.
“We’re just amazed with all the support that we have received,” Plataniotis said.
