DAYTON — The University of Dayton has named two new development officers for arts and business, less than two months after the university eliminated nine jobs from its advancement division as a part of a restructuring plan.

UD on Monday, Dec. 7, announced the hiring of Matt Luongo as director of development for the School of Business Administration, and Ed Valles as director of development for arts and libraries.

Both new hires fill previously vacant positions, according to Teri Rizvi, university spokeswoman.

On Oct. 19, UD eliminated nine advancement jobs, including three in development, two in marketing, two in communications, one in constituent relations and one that was vacant.

At the time, university officials said advancement would be advertising four new positions. Those positions are being advertised now and are unrelated to the new hires, Rizvi said.

UD’s development team of 16 major gift officers and support staff attracts private philanthropy in support of the university’s strategic priorities. Last fiscal year, UD attracted approximately $35.6 million in gifts and commitments, according to university officials.

In July, the university invested an additional $500,000 in the division’s budget to support marketing efforts and campaign initiatives, according to Deborah Read, vice president of university advancement. UD officials declined to release the division’s annual budget.

On Oct. 15, UD appointed James Brothers as associate vice president for development, the university’s top fundraising role.

Luongo, a 1998 UD graduate, worked as director of communications and director of business recruitment for the Dayton Development Coalition.

Valles spent six years with ThinkTV as director of community support.
