URBANA — A local bakery that’s been in downtown Urbana for six years is moving to Springfield, but it won’t mean much competition for area bakers.
That’s because the Bone-a-Fido bakery caters to dogs. Karen Heskett, who runs the business by herself, described it as a pet specialty store selling healthy pet food and homemade, gourmet dog biscuits.
While the business has done well in its current location in downtown Urbana, Heskett said Springfield will be a larger market that will hopefully allow her business to grow more quickly.
The business will be moved to 1025 N. Bechtle Ave., most likely in mid-October.
“The place will be a little bigger than what I have now,” she said Friday, Sept. 4.
Heskett said she enjoys working in Urbana, but the new space will give her business more opportunities to expand. Eventually, she said she’d like to hire a few additional employees.
The new space, for example, will allow her to offer more products, as well as a do-it-yourself dog wash.
She said she has been letting customers know about the move by word of mouth, as well as sending a few cards in the mail.
“I’ve never done anything like this before,” she said of the move.
