Playoff berths on the line tonight

SPRINGFIELD —

The best play, best catch and best finish of the season all happened in the same time.

Tyler Powell’s juggling act in the end zone in the final seconds last Friday gave Urbana a 38-31 victory over Indian Lake and preserved the Hillclimbers’ quest to host a first-round playoff game.

Urbana hasn’t hosted a playoff game since 2004 when it lost 56-20 to Delta. It played on the road in the first round in 2006, 2007 and 2011 and lost each time.

Entering a Week 10 game against Graham, Urbana is third in Division III, Region 10. The top eight teams in each region make the playoffs, and the top four teams host first-round games.

Vic Wright and Peyton Jones, both from Springfield, were the only two out of 46 entries to pick every game correctly last week. Vic Wright won by tiebreaker.

Game of the Week

Triad (8-1) at West Liberty-Salem (9-0): The winner claims the Ohio Heritage Conference championship. The Tigers are trying to secure a second straight 10-0 season.

West Liberty has already clinched a playoff berth, while the Cardinals could get in even if they lose. Pick: West Liberty-Salem 34, Triad 28.

Cedarville (1-7-1) at Catholic Central (1-8): The Irish have suffered two two-point losses this season. Pick: Catholic Central 24, Cedarville 21.

Centerville (5-4) at Springfield (1-8): Springfield junior wide receiver Thaddeus Snodgrasses listed his top five college choices on Twitter this week (in no particular order): Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Michigan State. Pick: Centerville 31, Springfield 12.

Graham (1-8) at Urbana (8-1): Urbana leads the Central Buckeye Conference in scoring (43.9 points per game). Pick: Urbana 42, Graham 6.

Greenon (1-8) at Northwestern (4-5): A victory would give the Warriors their first non-losing season since 2006. Pick: Northwestern 28, Greenon 10.

Northeastern (4-5) at Mechanicsburg (3-6): The Jets have won three straight and would finish third in the OHC, their best finish since 2007, by themselves with a win or a Southeastern loss. Pick: Northeastern 24, Mechanicsburg 7.

Southeastern (5-4) at Greeneview (4-5): After two straight losses, the Trojans need some help to make the playoffs. They are 11th in D-VI, Region 24. Pick: Southeastern 21, Greeneview 13.

Tecumseh (7-2) at Kenton Ridge (6-3): The Cougars could make the playoffs for the second time ever with a victory. They are 10th in D-III, Region 12. Pick: Tecumseh 31, Kenton Ridge 14.

Tippecanoe (8-1) at Shawnee (6-3): The Braves will probably make the playoffs with a win. They are 11th in D-III, Region 12. Pick: Shawnee 20, Tippecanoe 13.

College

Wittenberg (6-1) at Denison (2-5): Wittenberg coach Joe Fincham won his 150th career game last weekend. He’s the third-winningest active coach in NCAA Division III. He’s 150-34 all-time and entered the season with the sixth-best career winning percentage in D-III history (.814) and the 23rd best percentage in all divisions. Pick: Wittenberg 38, Denison 13.

Urbana (6-2) at Missouri S&T (7-1): The Blue Knights can keep their Great Lakes Valley Conference title hopes alive with a victory. They have one loss and still have to play conference leader Indianapolis. Pick: Urbana 28, Missouri S&T 27.

Ohio State (8-0) at Penn State (5-2): The Nittany Lions have already lost to the real Ohio (Go Bobcats!). Pick: Ohio State 24, Penn State 20.

NFL

Chargers (3-3) at Browns (1-6): Cleveland has won one of its last two games. It’s getting hot. Pick: Browns 24, Chargers 21.
