SOUTH CHARLESTON —
Southeastern goes as the Perry sisters go. And they were going at full speed Monday night.
Taylor Perry, on her Senior Night, and freshman Lexi Perry combined for 20 of the Trojans’ first 22 points in a 50-18 Ohio Heritage Conference girls basketball victory over Cedarville.
They each made a 3-pointer in a 12-0 run to start the game, then Taylor made back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second quarter to put the Trojans (10-11, 6-7) up 22-10. Cedarville (4-16, 2-11) never threatened to come back.
“We’ve had trouble scoring all year, so it’s good to start the game shooting well,” Trojans coach Jim Lightle said. “Anytime you start out shooting well and defending well, you play better.”
Lexi Perry finished with 17 points and Taylor Perry scored 11. They combined for 24 points in the first half as the Trojans led 31-14 at halftime.
“We played pretty good in stretches, but defensively we had some lapses we haven’t seen too much of all year,” Cedarville coach Ralph Grant said.
Defense was the other part of the Trojans’ fast start. They used a soft zone press that created a lot of early turnovers by the Indians, who lost the ball 12 times in the first half.
“It’s more of a containment pressure,” Lightle said. “It baits you to come to us and makes you throw a lot of passes. And we hope they turn it over.”
Other than bunching six points late in the first quarter on a pair of free throws and a putback by Ellie Sizer and a 12-footer by Jamie Huston, the Indians were unable to find their offensive rhythm.
“I think we regressed tonight a little bit,” Grant said. “We weren’t aggressive. We looked like we were beat before we even stepped on the floor. We’ve been playing better, but they took us out of a lot of things we tried to do.”
The Division IV sectional tournament begins soon. Fourth-seeded Southeastern plays Feb. 16 at Brookville High School against No. 8 Twin Valley South (6-14).
“I think we’re peaking at the right time — we’re starting to win again,” Taylor Perry said. “We’re having a lot of fun together, meshing as a team.”
Cedarville, seeded No. 7, plays No. 6 Middletown Christian on Feb. 20 at Monroe High School.
“It would be great to get at least one tournament win for our two seniors,” Grant said. “I think we match up well.”
