SPRINGFIELD — Kyle Jones has never won at his favorite track, Winchester Speedway.

With three USA Modifieds races left at the famed Indiana track, the Shawnee High School grad is hoping he can finally break through this season.

“We’ve never won at Winchester, but we’re always right there as long as nothing catastrophic happens,” Jones said.

Jones is currently fifth in the points standings in the traveling USA Modified series, 29 points behind leader Brad Springer.

The series has four events remaining with three races at Winchester on July 18, Sept. 6 and Oct. 18.

He’ll also take the track at Plymouth (Ind.) Speedway for the first time on Aug. 7.

“It looks like a fun track,” Jones said. “I should be pretty decent there.”

But he knows Winchester will be where he’ll make his mark. Jones has finished second at Winchester four times, including the USA Modified race there last October.

“We led most of the race, and got passed with 15 to go,” Jones said. “Hopefully we can have a little bit better run.”

Jones won the season-opening USA Modifieds race at Berlin Raceway on May 22, but didn’t actually win the race. He finished second and was awarded the victory after Mike Bursley failed inspection.

“We’ll take them any way we can get them,” Jones said.

He finished third at M-40 Speedway in Jones, Mich., on June 11, earning the Hard Charger award. He’s struggled recently, finishing 24th at Angola on June 25 and 14th at Berlin on July 3.

“We’ve struggled the past few races,” Jones said. “We’re just trying some different things, and I cost us a couple times.”

Jones also led the points in the weekly series at Berlin Speedway for a few weeks earlier this season, but the 5½-hour drive became too much. He ran a few races at Kil-Kare and Columbus Motor Speedway, but decided to run the full USA Modifieds schedule.

“We decided to go run with the USA guys,” Jones said. “It’s really all we’ve done.”

He’s hoping his luck turns around at Winchester this weekend.

“It’s my favorite track,” Jones said. “My dad (Andy) likes it. Everything about the place is awesome, and really historic. It’s kind of like our Daytona 500.”
