NEW CARLISLE — Cinderella wears cleats in Urbana.

A girls soccer program that had won just one tournament game in its history claimed its first sectional title with its third straight one-goal victory, this time over a team that beat it soundly earlier in the season.

The Hillclimbers blanked Kenton Ridge 1-0 in a Division II sectional final at Tecumseh on Monday, Oct. 26.

“The slipper still fits,” said Urbana coach Lance Jackson, whose team also broke the school record with its 10th victory of the season. “It’s almost destiny.”

The lone goal was scored by senior Samantha Riefstahl, who hadn’t scored all year. With 27:42 left in the first half, freshman Christy Finney dribbled along the goal line and passed the ball to the middle of the box. Riefstahl got a foot on it and put it in the net.

“It’s definitely important getting that first goal,” senior midfielder Lillia Steffenson said. “It really changes the momentum. You can sit back, play defense and control the game.”

Since losing 5-1 to Kenton Ridge on Sept. 9, Urbana has improved and adjusted its lineup. Christy Finney emerged as a consistent scorer, and Katie Finney moved from midfielder to sweeper. Urbana has allowed three goals in the last 11 games.

“When we got past Miami East, I was satisfied,” Jackson said. “These girls were like, ‘What do we need to do now?’ All the credit to them.”

Kenton Ridge finished the season 11-3-4.

“Finishing the season with only three losses is a pretty good accomplishment,” coach Mike Sherrock said. “We just wish we had extended it one more game.”
