Shawnee shocks Springfield

SPRINGFIELD —

If it’s Saturday night, it must be time for a Shawnee comeback.

A week after rallying from a double-digit deficit to beat Troy on a last-second shot, Shawnee trailed Springfield by 13 points with seven minutes to play. No last-second shot was required this time as the Braves closed with a 25-10 run to shock the Wildcats 58-56 at Shawnee.

“We’re never going to give up, and we know we can be in any game we play,” said Shawnee star Jaelin Williams.

Williams, a 6-foot-5 senior, was all over the stat sheet in the comeback for the Braves (6-1). He scored 12 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, finished with 15 rebounds and affected numerous shots in the final minutes as the Wildcats continued their strategy of attacking the basket.

“He’s got to go do a lot of things for us,” Shawnee coach Chris McGuire said. “He’s the one guy who can go up and get rebounds with anyone. And he could be more aggressive on contesting shots when we were able to pack it in.”

Springfield (6-4) lost its third straight and second straight to a Central Buckeye Conference team. The Wildcats lost to Urbana on Thursday.

“It’s a 32-minute game and we let up defensively giving up over 20 points in the fourth quarter,” Springfield coach Isiah Carson said. “You can’t win that way.”

Carson said he is not worried that the losing streak will become something his young team can’t overcome as it heads into a tough run of games in the Greater Western Ohio Conference Central Division.

“We’re playing well; we’re just not putting it all together,” Carson said. “It’s hard for a young team to put it together. It’s still early. We’re not down in spirits.”

The Braves did not let trailing 46-33 get them down. They had already trailed by 12 in the third quarter before cutting the Wildcats’ lead to 35-33. The Wildcats responded with an 11-0 run before the Braves began their final comeback.

The comeback became a 56-50 lead with 28 seconds to play before Springfield’s Henry Alexander made two long 3-pointers. But in between, Jalen Nelson got behind Springfield’s press for an easy two and the Wildcats ran out of time.

“It’s huge for us,” McGuire said. “They beat us the last three times fairly handily. It was a challenge for us going and playing against a good team, an athletic team with a lot of good players. It can only give us more confidence as we go on.”
