Seeded freshman advance to quarterfinals

By John Cummings

FAIRBORN —

Count Chaminade Julienne junior Lyle Plummer among those who believe seeding the top freshmen at the GMVWA Holiday Tournament is a good idea.

Six freshmen were seeded this year, but Plummer ran into one whose school opted not to try to seed its top frosh.

Plummer defeated standout Greeneview freshman Logan LaCure in a second-round match to move into today’s quarterfinals at Wright State University’s Ervin J. Nutter Center.

“I think it is a good idea so some of the good kids don’t get stuck with a bad draw,” Plummer said. “The GMVWA has outstanding competition; it is a great training ground for the state tournament. Every match here is just a battle.”

Of the six seeded freshmen, Graham’s Alex Marinelli was the highest, grabbing the third seed at 152.

The Falcons had three freshmen seeded: Brent Moore (120), Mario Kastl (126) and Marinelli. Covington’s Ryan Ford was seeded at 126 and Urbana’s Jack Harris was seeded fourth at 182. Delta’s Jake Spiess was also a fourth seed at 106.

All six seeded freshmen advanced to this morning’s quarterfinals.

Match of the day: The second-round showdown between Plummer and LaCure proved to be the best of the first day.

They were tied 0-0 after the first period with LaCure recording an escape in the second period for a 1-0 lead. Plummer escaped toward the end of the third period to force overtime. LaCure led again, 2-1, entering the second 30 seconds of overtime, but Plummer tied the match again to force the ultimate tiebreak.

Plummer was able to ride LaCure out in the ultimate tiebreak for the 3-2 win.

“It was a helluva match,” said the fourth-seeded Plummer. “We drill 30 second goes in practice all the time and it has really helped with mat awareness. Being in shape helped too.”

May, Davis out: Eaton’s returning state placer Michael May was scratched by coach Mark Silvers due to illness.

May, who would have been the second seed at 106, is still battling a stomach virus that was going around prior to the winter break.

With May out, Wayne’s Sarah Allen became the first female seeded at the tournament, moving from alternate to the eighth seed. Allen won her first match before falling in the second round to Gage Branson of Glen Este.

Two-time Middletown state qualifier Latrell Davis was also a late scratch. The 152-pound senior showed up at Middletown ready to come to the tournament, but coach Nick Reiter sent him home.

“He has been battling that stomach virus,” Reiter said. “He said he was ready to go, but you could look at him and tell he was still sick, so I told him to just go home and rest.”

Saturday finale: Wrestling resumes today at 11 a.m. with the championship quarterfinals and third round of consolation.

Finals are slated to begin at 5 p.m., or 45 minutes after the conclusion of the last round of consolation.
