Prep spotlight: Tristan Singer, Urbana

By Jeff Gilbert

Tristan Singer is in his second year as a starter for the Urbana boys basketball team and has become the team’s top scorer as a senior. He wants to join his former teammate and brother, Karl, at Ohio State, but he is undecided about what to study. Singer recently sat down with the News-Sun.

Question: What’s different about being a senior?

Answer: You’re in more of a leadership position. The younger guys sort of look up to you and follow your example. I remember doing that as a younger guy.

Q: Who did you learn from to help prepare you for your senior year?

A: I definitely learned a lot from my brother. I’ve been growing up playing basketball with him. He’s talked to me about how he misses it. I don’t plan on playing any college ball or even trying to, so this is it. And he told me not to waste it or take it for granted.

Q: What do you like the most about basketball, and what is your favorite memory?

A: winning games. But I also enjoy the camaraderie of basketball and getting close to all those other guys on the team. My favorite memory has got to be last year going 10-0 in the league and then cutting down the nets and celebrating with the team on the court. I’ve still got a piece of the net sitting on my bedside table.

Q: How far can the team go this year?

A: None of the goals from last year have changed. I don’t think some people are expecting as much of us, but we still are. The first goal is always to be 10-0 and win the league. Then we want to make it to the sectional championship and if we can the district.

Q: Why do you want to attend Ohio State?

A: Coming from a small town like Urbana, I like the idea of going to the biggest public school in the country. I think I’m ready for a bigger city and ready for a bit more to do. But I don’t think I would’ve wanted to grow up anywhere else. It was the best place for me.
