Rain washes out most high school football games

By Marc F. Pendleton

Rain and its cousin lightning mostly washed out Week 5 of high school football on Friday night.

That’s becoming a common theme this season. Week 3 also was double-teamed by wayward weather conditions.

Like then, many area games will resume today where they left off on Friday night. Most were stopped in the second quarter.

  • Thurgood Marshall’s unbeaten season ended at Winton Woods, 17-13. Touchdown runs by Vayante Copeland and DeAngelo Worthy staked the Cougars to a 13-0 first-quarter lead. Winton Woods (4-1) scored the winning TD with 3:55 left.

Marshall (4-1) entered the week as the No. 2 team in the Division III state rankings.

  • Heath Harding of Dayton Christian surpassed 1,000 rushing halfway through the regular season by fueling the Warriors to a 47-0 blitz of Fairfield Christian. The senior running back turned just nine carries into 213 yards rushing and three TDs.

That bumps Harding’s season rushing total to 1,044 and 18 scores. Even better, DC is 5-0 in its march to make the D-V playoffs for the first time.

  • Springfield and visiting Xenia battled to a 14-all first-half deadlock before the game was postponed until 11:30 a.m. today at Evans Stadium.
  • Antwan Persons of Chaminade Julienne lit up host Roger Bacon for a career-high 217 yards rushing and three TDs. The Eagles (4-1) spotted Bacon a 7-6 lead before scoring 28 straight points.
  • Lakota West rode running back Mikel Horton and pushed its record to 5-0 following a 32-8 defeat of host Fairfield. The junior rumbled for 113 yards and scored on runs of 8 and 2 yards.
  • Alter improved to 4-0-1 with a 56-6 defeat of host Purcell Marian.
  • Edgewood joined Thurgood in falling for the first time. The Cougars (4-1) were upset at Ross, 41-12. The win improves Ross to 2-3.
  • Alter improved to 4-0-1 with a 56-6 defeat of host Purcell Marian.
