Springfield Shawnee senior Kendra Crew has won titles at the league, sectional and district levels. She’s earned All-American status from the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association and signed a scholarship to swim at the University of Kentucky.

Even with all those awards and accolades, there’s one thing missing for both Crew and the Braves’ program — a state championship.

Crew opens defense of those previously mentioned titles, while going for that elusive state crown, as the Central Buckeye Conference hosts its league meet Saturday at Wright State University.

In other league meets this weekend, the Greater Miami Conference competes tonight and Saturday at Mason High School, the Southwestern Buckeye League is at Beavercreek YMCA on Saturday and the Southwest Ohio Conference is at Miami University on Saturday.

With superior depth, Shawnee coach Jason Hill expects Tippecanoe to be tough to beat in both boys and girls.

“Tippecanoe has enough kids they are essentially putting four kids in every event,” Hill said. “We do the best we can to compete with them, but from a numbers standpoint we are not at that level. I think it’s going to be a good race for second in the CBC for both the boys and girls.”

As for Crew, she hopes to better her efforts from 2012. She swept the league, sectional and district meets in both the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200 individual medley. She finished second in the Division II state meet in both at Canton.

“She was happy with her second-place finishes, but not completely satisfied,” Shawnee coach Jason Hill said. “She knows she can do better. She’s always been very focused and very driven.”

Diving right in: While the swimmers wait until Friday and Saturday to take to the pool, divers open the sectional meet with their events at Miami University. The Division II boys and girls go first on Monday, followed by D-I boys on Tuesday and D-I girls on Wednesday. A handful of sectional champs return to defend titles including Hamilton’s Khayman Jones and Mason’s Sean Sargent (D-I boys), Alter’s Trent Hagenbuch (D-II boys), Mason’s Madeline Sewell (D-I girls) and Bellbrook’s Hannah Collins (D-II girls).

Swimming events follow on Friday and Saturday at St. Xavier High School, Mason High School, the Washington Twp. Recreation Center and Trotwood High School.
