COLUMBUS — It seems it’s not a normal Friday night at the state wrestling tournament if mighty Graham High School hasn’t wrapped the state team title a day early.

So when the Falcons wrapped up their 12th straight Division II team title Friday night, on the surface it might seem like business as usual during the second day of the 75th annual state tourney at Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center.

But it was much more than that as with that 12th straight team title, Graham tied the state record for consecutive team championships, which is held by another wrestling juggernaut, Lakewood St. Edward in D-I.

The Falcons did it by putting six wrestlers into this evening’s finals, after taking eight into Friday night’s championship semifinals. They have 156 points, while runner-up Lexington only has 81. And head coach Jeff Jordan couldn’t be happier.

“It’s fun for the guys to go after things like that,” said Jordan of the state record. “It does add a little flavor to winning a state title. But records are meant to be broken. Right now, St. Ed’s is wanting to get seven (individual) champions and is going after the team points record.

“It takes a little pressure off the coaching staff and myself,” he continued. “I always tell the guys it sure is great to have it wrapped up on Friday night. Now we’ve got to reach some of our personal goals tomorrow night.”

Advancing to their championship matches for the Falcons are seniors Ryan Taylor (120 pounds), Blake Kastl (145), Isaac Jordan (160) and Huston Evans (182), junior Bo Jordan (152) and sophomore Micah Jordan (126).

Two-time state champ Taylor scored a 10-5 win over Aaron Gessic of Perry then was dominant in his evening semifinal, scoring a 20-5 technical fall over returning state champ Mike Rix of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.

Kastl was even more dominant, getting a pin followed by a technical fall. Two-time state champ Isaac Jordan pinned both of his opponents. Former state champ Evans had a pin in his quarterfinal and then toped Clay Rollison of Caledonia River Valley 11-4 to earn his third trip to the finals.

Another two-time state champ, Bo Jordan, had no problem on Friday, getting a pin in the morning and scoring a 26-11 technical fall of Alex Bergman of Oak Harbor in the evening. And his brother, Micah Jordan, notched two pins on the way to the final.

Two Falcons, however, lost in the semifinals — both freshmen.

Eli Stickley (106) lost 8-4 in the evening after an 11-4 morning victory. And Eli Seipel (113) got a pin in the quarters, but fell to the No. 1 ranked 113-pounder in the country, CVCA’s Nathan Tomasello, 17-4 in the evening.
