SPRINGFIELD —

In the middle of all this players, Tecumseh coach Kent Massie led the chant.

“CBC! CBC! CBC” the Arrows chanted.

Four years before, on the same field, Tecumseh had clinched a 10-0 season and the outright Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Trail Division championship with a 54-7 victory at Kenton Ridge. That was a cold night, and Massie couldn’t dodge the Gatorade shower after the win.

This was a cold night, too, but more memorable for the rain and the muck that turned the Arrows into a group of players only a laundromat owner could love. But the Arrows are some tough mudders. They like the ugly nights, senior quarterback Tony Evans said, and they showed it with a 49-7 victory over the Cougars on Friday, clinching their first CBC title since 2009 and their first outright championship since 2008.

“This is everything,” Evans said. “We’ve been talking about winning the CBC since seventh grade. It’s just been a great thing and a great experience.”

Tecumseh (8-2, 5-0 CBC) also clinched a playoff berth in Division II, Region 7 and will likely play on the road in the first round against Zanesville or Dresden Tri Valley.

This one ended almost as soon as the always-entertaining Kenton Ridge band — not deterred by the conditions at all — left the field before the opening kickoff.

Tecumseh scored on the first play of its first drive, on the third play of its second drive, on the first play of the its third drive and on the first play of its fourth drive. It had four touchdowns on six plays, and those four touchdown runs by four different players — Christian Evans, Chuck Buchanan, Tony Evans and Jimmy Rowland — totalled 222 yards.

Christian Evans and Buchanan scored again in the first half to give the Arrows a 42-0 halftime lead. Evans had the Arrows’ only score of the second half, a 36-yard run in the third quarter.

“The kids stayed focused and played well,” Massie said. “It speaks volumes about the senior class that we have. The kids came out ready to play.”

Tecumseh rushed for 330 yards in the first half on just 20 carries.

“We prepared for this,” Tony Evans said. “We’re a running team. We love to play in the rain. We were excited for it.”
