Prep football power rankings Week 8

By Staff

Division I

1. Springboro (7-0): High-scoring Panthers make an impressive debut as No. 1 following Beavercreek’s upset of Wayne. Boro will be hard-pressed to keep the top spot with a tough closing regular season, beginning with visiting Miamisburg (5-2) today.

2. Lakota West (7-0): Firebirds haven’t had a close game since the eight-point defeat of La Salle in the season opener. They’ve also climbed to No. 2 in the Region 4 computer rankings; host Middletown.

3. Centerville (5-2): Elks have found a way each of the last five weeks and take a five-game win streak into the GWOC game of the week against visiting Wayne. Centerville’s 13-0 defeat of Northmont knocked the T-Bolts out of the rankings.

4. Wayne (5-2): Just when we think the Warriors might run off as the GWOC’s Central’s best, Beavercreek weighs in with a 14-13 upset. That’ll all be forgotten should Wayne win at Centerville.

5. Miamisburg (5-2): It’s official; first-year coach Steve Channel has turned the Vikings around. Burg is at Springboro this week and Lebanon next week, which will make or break its GWOC South and Region 4 playoff hopes.

Others: Beavercreek, Fairborn, Fairfield, Fairmont, Hamilton, Lakota East, Lebanon, Mason, Middletown, Northmont, Springfield, Troy, Xenia.

Division II

1. Trotwood-Madison (5-2): What’s wrong with Trotwood? Nothing, especially now that the Rams are playing their best ball. University (Fla.), which beat the Rams in the opener, remains unbeaten. Wayne is their only other loss. Climbed to No. 7 in the Region 8 rankings; at Troy.

2. Tippecanoe (7-0): Now it gets interesting for the Red Devils, who host Tecumseh (5-2). Next week Tipp hosts Kenton Ridge (5-2) and finishes at Shawnee (4-3) in Week 10. What’s all that mean? Everything.

3. Franklin (6-1): Great passing and running games and a shutdown defense are all that the Wildcats have going for them. Haven’t scored less than 29 points the last month. Will need all their firepower and more at Eaton (5-2) today and Brookville (6-1) next week.

4. Tecumseh (5-2): Arrows have won three straight and swap places with Edgewood. Tecumseh’s only setbacks are to unbeaten Northwest (7-0) and Urbana (6-1) in Weeks 3-4; at Tipp.

5. Edgewood (5-2): Cougars made a gallant effort vs. Northwest, falling 35-28. Mustn’t look past Talawanda (1-6) and ahead to next week’s showdown at Mount Healthy (7-0).

Others: Bellbrook, Greenville, Kings, Little Miami, Piqua, Ross, Sidney, Stebbins, Talawanda, Vandalia Butler, West Carrollton.

Division III

1. Thurgood Marshall (6-1): Cougars rode the running of Denzel Norvell and Vayante’ Copeland to crush usual playoff contender Jonathan Alder 52-14. Finish the regular season with three straight City League games, including Thursday’s matchup with Belmont.

2. Alter (6-0-1): Knights were tested by McNicholas last week and settled for a 35-27 win. Alter has not been beaten in 17 straight regular-season games, dating to the 2010 finale vs. CJ; at Carroll.

3. Urbana (6-1): Hillclimbers are No. 6 in the Region 11 rankings and appear on their way to a CBC Mad River title; at Northwestern.

4. Eaton (5-2): Eagles have mounted a three-game win streak but still are no better than No. 11 in Region 12. They switch positions with Shawnee and likely secure a postseason berth should they beat visiting Franklin today.

5. Springfield Shawnee (4-3): Hard to get a lock on the Braves, who had a three-game win streak snapped by Tecumseh, 24-13; at Bellefontaine.

Others: Bellefontaine, Carroll, Dunbar, Graham, Kenton Ridge, Meadowdale, Monroe, Oakwood.

Division IV

1. Milton-Union (6-1): Bulldogs overtake the top spot for the first time after previous leader CJ fell to Badin. Milton has won four straight and lost only to unbeaten Tipp; hosts Dixie (5-2).

2. Chaminade Julienne (5-2): Eagles fell 17-14 to Badin (4-3). More concerning, CJ is buried at No. 14 in Region 16. They msut crack the top eight to return to the postseason; at Fenwick in a key GCL North matchup.

3. Fenwick (5-2): Falcons have pounded Purcell Marian (1-6) and Roger Bacon (0-7) the last two weeks. They’ll host CJ and finish at Alter and Carroll, which will determine their GCL North and playoff fates.

4. Brookville (6-1): That Week 2 nonleague loss to Anna has been soothed by five straight wins. At Bellbrook (2-5) today then host Franklin in Week 9, which should determine the SWBL Southwestern title.

5. Carlisle (5-2): Indians recovered from a 51-42 shootout setback to Milton-Union by taking out Madison, 20-12; hosts Valley View.

Others: Badin, Greeneview, Greenon, Madison, Northeastern, Northridge, Northwestern, Ponitz Tech, Preble Shawnee, Valley View.

Division V

1. Coldwater (7-0): Cavaliers posted the 500th victory in program history by dodging Anna 7-0 last week. If you’re not already at the stadium by the time this is read, might have a hard time finding a place to stand when Marion Local (6-1) visits today.

2. Covington (7-0): Buccaneers have had a great run of teams, and this bunch appears to be among the best. Hosts National Trail (6-1) in what should be for the CCC championship.

3. Versailles (5-2): Tigers have won four straight to claw their way back into Region 20 playoff contention at No. 7; at Delphos St. John’s.

4. West Liberty-Salem (7-0): Tigers must beat Mechanicsburg (2-5) and Cedarville (1-5-1) before meeting Triad (6-1) in a Week 10 showdown that will decide the OHC title.

5. Dayton Christian (7-0): Warriors remain the wildcard of D-V. Defense has been relentless, allowing one TD or less in four of the last five weeks. RB Heath Harding (1,409 yards; 19 TDs) has been unstoppable; hosts Meadowdale.

Others: Anna, Bethel, Dixie, Miami East, National Trail, Twin Valley South.

Division VI

1. Marion Local (6-1): Flyers are in the brunt of the MAC schedule. After falling to Versailles, they’ve thumped both Delphos SJ’s and St. Henry; at Coldwater in the MAC game of the week.

2. Minster (5-2): Wildcats are in the Region 24 playoff hunt at No. 7 after drilling Anna and Parkway the last two weeks; host Fort Recovery.

3. Bradford (6-1): Injured RB James Canan (dislocated elbow) was good as ever in last week’s 46-13 blitz of Arcanum. He rushed for 281 yards on 13 carries and five TDs, all in the first half; at Miami East.

4. Fort Loramie (5-2): Redskins have won two straight and five out of six. Even better, they rank No. 2 in Region 24; at Riverside.

5. St. Henry (4-3): Redskins are on a two-game slide, as would most other teams after playing Coldwater and Marion Local in back-to-back MAC games. Fall from No. 2; host Parkway.

Others: Ansonia, Arcanum, Cedarville, Central Catholic, Cin. Christian, Fort Recovery, Jefferson, Lehman Catholic, Mississinawa Valley, New Bremen, New Miami, Southeastern, Tri-County North.
