Mike Holmgren this week made news at a press conference for promising to conduct more press conferences.
Only in Cleveland would this happen.
Holmgren is president of the Browns, who last had a winning season in 2007 and have been through more coaches and administrators over the past 13 years than just about any sports franchise on this continent.
The football team’s owner, Randy Lerner, is rather reclusive, so it falls to Holmgren to be the front man, a role the Super Bowl-winning former coach had seemingly been reluctant to fill until word got back to him — after two years — that many were questioning whether he viewed this job as anything more than a golden parachute.
This season will be Holmgren’s third at the helm of the Browns. He says he’s expecting a sizeable bump in wins from last year’s four, although he would not be drawn into the trap of saying how many wins would constitute such a bump. Guess he’s learned after saying much the same thing last year and watching the team fall one short of the five that cost then-head coach Eric Mangini his job.
But at least Holmgren sat there on Thursday and painstakingly answered all the questions, most of which — as seems to be the case whenever anyone in the front office is made available — concerned quarterbacks.
Holmgren’s appearance, if nothing else, served to remind the most loyal fans in sports that he’s still committed to summoning whatever magic made him successful in other places and that his $50 million contract eventually will prove to be a wise investment.
That said, it will be interesting to see if Holmgren keeps his promise to be more visible if the team starts 0-3.
