Davis powers Arrows past Graham

By Jeff Gilbert

ST. PARIS —

Tecumseh point guard Dalton Davis clearly saw the reasons behind his team’s 65-54 boys basketball victory over Graham on Tuesday night.

“We brought a lot of energy to the court tonight, played really well and lit it up,” Davis said.

Lit it up is one way to say it. The Arrows (13-2) made their first three shots – all 3-pointers – built an early lead, fought off a late run, overcame 18 turnovers, finished 11-of-17 from the 3-point line and shot 59 percent from the field.

“They just stayed red-hot and we didn’t do defensively what we needed to do to stop their wide-open shots,” Graham coach Dan Moore said. “We didn’t contain their drive well enough, and we helped too much, and that gave them a lot of wide-open threes. Normally we do better than that.”

Davis scored a season-high 18 points, made two 3-pointers and penetrated the lane for baskets and passes to open 3-point shooters.

“Dalton stepped up tonight, it was his turn,” Arrows coach Roger Culbertson said. “He’s been a solid part of our team all year, he’s taken care of the basketball and taken a leadership role for us.”

Gabe Winans-Berner (14 points) and Cam Wardley (11 points) each made three 3-pointers for the Arrows, Morgan Clark made two and Josiah McFarland (12 points) hit one.

“We’ve got a lot of kids that can shoot the basketball and play, so it’s pick your poison what you want to try to take away from us,” Culbertson said. “Our kids are smart and find the open man and have been unselfish.”

Graham (7-6) made a run behind Grant Goddard, who scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half. Tecumseh led 51-49 when Goddard missed two free throws with 4:07 left. Within a minute, Wardley hit a 3, Davis turned a steal into a layup, McFarland made a free throw and Wardley scored off another turnover for a 59-49 lead.

Graham is 5-0 in the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division despite no one taller than 6-foot-1. In league games, the Falcons have held opponents below their average, but the Arrows were almost eight points above average.

“It’s just hard work,” Moore said. “It’s a mindset.”

Tecumseh is one game behind Shawnee the CBC Kenton Trail. The Arrows face a two-loss Tippecanoe team Friday with Shawnee looming as the season finale at home.

“Each game from here league-wise is big,” Culbertson said. “We’ve got to play a good game Friday for sure.”
