Witt football to open with Butler in 2013, 2014

By David Jablonski

SPRINGFIELD —

The Wittenberg football team will play only one nonconference game in the 2013 and 2014 seasons because of the new North Coast Athletic Conference schedule in which every team plays every other team, but it will be a memorable game both seasons.

Wittenberg posted its schedules for both seasons last week, and the only surprise was that it plays Butler University in the season opener on Sept. 7, 2013, and Sept. 6, 2014. Wittenberg leads the all-time series against Butler 7-3, but the teams haven’t met since 1985.

Butler plays in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision. It competes in the Pioneer Football League, along with Dayton and eight other schools. The Flyers swept two games from the Tigers played 2005 and 2006.

The other intriguing change to the schedule involves the date of the Wabash game. The Tigers will play their rivals in the second-to-last game of the season both years.

Daniels selected: Jon Daniels, the South High School graduate who wrapped up his career with the Tigers this season, will play in the third annual National Bowl Game at 1 p.m. Sunday at J. Birney Stadium in Allentown, Pa.

Daniels, a two-year starter at defensive end, ranked fifth on the team in tackles with 65. The National Bowl Game includes 80 college seniors from NCAA Divisions II and II and NAIA.

Coeling honored: Wittenberg junior offensive tackle Aaron Coeling was named to the D3Football.com All-North Region Third Team.
