FAIRBORN —
It appears the Wright State men’s basketball season will resume next week in one of the three postseason tournaments below the Big Dance, but Raider fans may have to wait until Sunday for an official announcement.
In the meantime, Athletic Director Bob Grant has been teasing fans on Twitter. He wrote Thursday, “Could be playing a little more basketball. We’ll know soon?” Later in the day, Grant posted a picture of a basketball next to a thumbs-up sign.
On Friday, Grant wrote, “Anticipate playing a MBB post season game next Tuesday or Wednesday. Stay tuned.”
Grant said Friday afternoon he was unable to comment any more on a possible postseason bid.
Assistant coach Scott Woods also released a clue about the Raiders’ future, writing on Twitter, “Well, the postseason beard may live to see another day, or week.”
The CollegeInsider.com Tournament, or CIT, and the College Basketball Invitational are the most likely destinations for the Raiders, but the NIT hasn’t been ruled out.
Three Horizon League teams have already accepted invitations to the CIT: Green Bay, Youngstown State and Illinois-Chicago. Green Bay plays at Bradley on Wednesday. Youngstown and UIC will host first-round games against opponents yet to be determined.
The 16-team CBI field will be announced Sunday. That tournament features a best-of-three championship series between the final two teams.
Last season, Butler and Milwaukee played in the CBI, and Cleveland State and Valparaiso played in the NIT.
Wright State, which lost 62-54 to Valparaiso on Tuesday in the Horizon League championship game, made the NCAA tournament field in 1993 and 2007, but hasn’t played in any other postseason tournament since it moved to Division I.
