They were 27-4 two seasons ago when they beat the Tigers 63-62 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on a buzzer-beater. Marietta beat Wittenberg 87-63 last season in Marietta, but the Pioneers faded late in the season and finished 17-9. … Tyler Hammond, who hit the game-winning shot against Wittenberg two seasons ago, had 23 points in Marietta’s last game on 10-of-13 shooting. … Marietta shot 2-of-19 from 3-point range in the loss to Ohio Wesleyan on Nov. 17.

Wittenberg notes: The Tigers are shooting 43 percent from 3-point range. Newell has made 8-of-13. Freshman Alex Fultz has made 4-of-6. … Collins leads the team with 7.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. … Leahy and Masin have combined to shoot 22-of-27 from the free-throw line. … Fultz had 13 points off the bench in Wittenberg’s last game Nov. 20, a 66-54 victory at Capital.

Wittenberg coach Bill Brown on Marietta: “They’re very similar to the team we played last year. They had two prime guys who didn’t play against us last year because of injuries. One is gone. They lost a real key player in Kevin Knab, a post guy, but they made a commitment to playing 10 people, which causes less of a falloff in experience from one year to the next. They’re benefiting from it.”
