DAYTON — Mark Riggins didn’t need another lesson in the business of baseball. He knew from experience it can be a cold game — and it was cold in a different way Tuesday as temperatures dipped into the 30s during the Dayton Dragons’ 6-2 loss to Lansing.
Riggins, who was at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday in his new job as the Reds’ minor league pitching coordinator, lost his job as pitching coach for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1995 when manager Joe Torre and his entire coaching staff were dismissed.
It happened again to Riggins last fall. He was the Cubs’ pitching coach last season, but when Dale Sveum replaced Mike Quade as manager, Riggins was out of work.
“It was very disappointing,” Riggins said. “That’s the name of the game. That’s the way the business runs.”
Riggins found himself in baseball limbo for a few weeks. Then his old boss in St. Louis, Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty, called. The Reds hired Riggins in January. He replaced Mack Jenkins, who was promoted to assistant pitching coach on the major-league staff.
“This will be my 16th year as a coordinator,” said Riggins, 54, a resident of Murray, Ky. “I’m pretty used to this job. Luckily, I landed on my feet. I love what I’m doing. I love the organization. I love working with the kids.”
Although the Dragons have lost three straight after a 2-0 start, Riggins likes what he sees in Dayton. He’s in charge of putting the rotations together for all the Reds’ affiliates.
“I think we’ve put together a good staff here,” he said. “All of them belong here, and I think we can compete here.”
At this point in the season, Dragons pitchers have an 80-85 pitch limit. That’s up from 70-75 in spring training. Riggins said they increase the limit to 90 during the first half. “We’re just trying to protect arms and keep everyone healthy.”
