Dragons' Tuttle a late scratch after injury

Starting pitcher feels pop in his elbow, and Jensen replaces him.

DAYTON — The Dayton Dragons’ evening started with a pop — and not the kind you get out of the vending machine.

Starting pitcher Daniel Tuttle was scratched at the last minute and replaced by Centerville grad Dan Jensen on Saturday at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons lost 6-3 to Bowling Green, falling to 0-2 in the second half, but the main concern after the game was for Tuttle.

“(Tuttle) felt a pop in his elbow while warming up,” Dragons Manager Delino DeShields said. “We’re a little concerned right now. I don’t think it’s looking too good. We’ll know more in a couple of days.”

Jensen (3-7) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked none, giving up two solo home runs.

It was his sixth start of the season. He began the season in the bullpen, moved to the rotation when Tuttle (1-3, 5.03 ERA) went on the disabled list May 12 and returned to the bullpen when Tuttle came off the DL.

“He did a good job tonight,” DeShields said. “Other than a couple of solo homers, he threw the ball well. He was really the only guy that had been stretched out like that. If anyone was going to jump in, it was going to be him.”

Game 2 for Stubbs

Reds center fielder Drew Stubbs’ three-game rehab stint with the Dragons should benefit all involved. Stubbs gets healthy, and the younger Dragons get to see how a big leaguer does it.

“You can learn a lot by watching,” said second baseman Ryan Wright. “He’s the third big leaguer we’ve had on rehab. I’m always watching them to see how they carry themselves.”

Stubbs played seven innings Saturday. He was 0-for-4 in the leadoff spot after going 0-for-2 Friday. He is scheduled to play nine innings today in the final game of the three-game series.

“Drew is a high-character dude,” DeShields said. “You don’t mind having guys like that around. He’s going to come in and talk to the guys. He’s going to help them any way he can, but he’s here to try to get back to Cincinnati.”

More moves on the way

The Dragons’ roster is always a work in progress, and it’s possible that some of the 2012 draft picks could find their way to Dayton soon.

“Changes are coming,” DeShields said. “I’m pretty sure there are going to be a couple more moves in the next week or so.”

Hot bats

• Juan Perez extended his hitting streak to eight games by going 2-for-3 Saturday. He’s 14-for-27 in that span.

• Designated hitter Juan Silva went 1-for-4. He entered the game batting .396 in his last 16 games and has raised his average from .210 to .258.
