Dragons take advantage of mistakes in win

By Matt Velazquez

DAYTON — The Dragons took advantage of four errors, three wild pitches and a passed ball to earn a series victory with a 5-1 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Saturday night at Fifth Third Field.

After an error and a wild pitch brought Theo Bowe across the plate, first baseman Robert Maddox capped the Dragons’ two-run first inning with an RBI single — his first hit since his recent promotion to Dayton.

Hot streaks: After a 1-for-14 start to the season, outfielder Kyle Waldrop has hit his stride at the plate over the past two weeks. In the Dragons’ last 10 games, Waldrop has gone 12-for-29 with four doubles, two triples, and six RBIs.

With a single in the fourth inning, catcher Yovan Gonzalez extended his hit streak to six games. During that span, the Dragons’ current batting leader has gone 10-for-22 with a pair of home runs and a double.

Browning on Humber: Before the game, Dragons pitching coach Tom Browning, who pitched a perfect game for the Reds on September 16, 1988 against the Dodgers, watched Chicago White Sox pitcher Philip Humber record the 21st perfect game in major-league history.

His response: “I know what he’s feeling and I know it’s pretty cool. It looked like he was in command the whole way, even the last guy.”

Quezada gets the ball: Right-hander Radhames Quezada, who has endured some discomfort in his first few starts, will pitch the opener of Dayton’s three-game set with the Cedar Rapids Kernels this afternoon.

“He’s been battling a nail problem, so we’re keeping a close eye on that,” manager Delino DeShields said, “and I think if he can get through that, I think he’s going to have a good year this year.”

Despite the nail injury, which has impaired his ability to throw breaking pitches effectively, the 21-year-old from the Dominican Republic owns the best ERA (2.57) among Dragons starters this season.

He has allowed four earned runs in 14 innings over three starts.

Today: The Cedar Rapids Kernels, a Western Division team, are making their only trip to Dayton until 2014 for a three-game set starting this afternoon. Because it is the first game of the series, first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. instead of the normal Sunday time of 2 p.m.
