Dragons' offense goes 'cold' in loss

DAYTON — Dayton Dragons left fielder Steve Selsky looked up at one point Tuesday and thought he saw snow. Being from California, he might have been less alarmed by a tornado.

Temperatures did hit the 30s, and that could be one reason the bats stayed cold in a 6-2 loss to Lansing at Fifth Third Field. After being shut out 8-0 Monday, Dayton fell behind 6-0 and didn’t score until the eighth.

Dayton had three hits for the second straight night, and Selsky thinks the offensive woes are contagious.

“It’s one of those things, like yawning,” he said. “When you yawn, I yawn. ... As a team, we’ve got to take a better approach. That’ll come. That’s why we play 140 games.”

Transactions: The Reds made two moves Tuesday, promoting infielder James Ewing from Dayton to Bakersfield and bringing infielder Brandon Dailey to the Dragons from extended spring training.

Ewing, who was making plans Monday to explore Dayton during his time here, went 3-for-5 Saturday in his only appearance in Dayton. An injury to Blaze third baseman Jason Christian opened a spot for Ewing.

“That’s probably where he should have been anyway with his age and level of play,” manager Delino DeShields said.

Dailey, a 34th-round pick in the 2010 draft, played in three games with the Dragons last September.

Second start: Justice French returns to the mound tonight at 7 o’clock against Lansing in the final game of the series after throwing six scoreless innings in the season opener Thursday.

“He’s got the stuff,” DeShields said. “He may not be here long.”
