Arrows win away from division title, playoff berth

By Jeff Gilbert

NEW CARLISLE —

The scouting report on Tecumseh’s offense is always the same: they’ll run the ball, run it some more and run it again. But watch out for the occasional pass because that usually means a big play.

When the Arrows lined up against Bellefontaine on Friday night the Chieftains had to know what was coming. But that doesn’t bother Arrows head coach Kent Massie.

“We do what we do,” he said.

And that was more than enough in a 35-6 Central Buckeye Conference victory that took the Arrows (7-2, 4-0) one step closer to their first CBC Kenton Trail Division championship since 2009 and a fifth straight playoff berth.

A couple of early season losses didn’t discourage the Arrows, who have won four straight.

“That motivated us even more,” said junior running back Christian Evans. “Now that we’ve won some games, we’ve got a taste of winning and we want it even more.”

Behind an aggressive offensive line, Evans led the Arrows to a 28-point second quarter with touchdown runs of 10, 30 and 3 yards. He gained 155 yards on 18 carries, and all but one carry and 2 yards came in the first half. He now has 1,098 yards and 18 touchdowns.

“That means a lot,” Evans said of surpassing 1,000 yards. “We’ve got a great, strong line.”

The hard-running Arrows rushed for 386 yards and outgained the Chieftains (1-7, 0-4) 463-195, breaking tackles all along the way. Quarterback Tony Evans, Christian’s older brother, scored from 34 yards out on a draw play when he broke away from three Chieftains at the 20.

Then there was the big pass play the Arrows always seem to execute — on a 52-yard catch and tackle-breaking run by Chuck Buchanan to the 3 with eight seconds left in the first half to set up a touchdown.

“You play best when you play your fastest, and you play your fastest when you know what you are supposed to do,” Massie said. “The speed of our game is good. The mental part is where we’ve really grown over the course of the season.”

Next Friday the Arrows play at Kenton Ridge with a chance to win another CBC title and make the Division II Region 7 playoffs. The Arrows entered Friday’s game No. 7 in the region. The top eight teams will make the playoffs.

“Playoffs, we don’t talk about it at all,” Massie said. “We know if we take care of the task at hand that all takes care of itself. There’s a lot at stake in that game.”
