Ohioans to get sales tax holiday in August for back-to-school supplies

Gov. John Kasich signed the bill today.

For the third year in a row, Ohioans shopping for three days in August will get a “sales tax holiday” when purchasing clothing and school supplies.

Gov. John Kasich signed the bill allowing for the holiday on Tuesday.

The bill establishes a tax holiday for Aug. 4 to Aug. 6.

Shoppers won’t be charged sales tax on clothing items up to $75 each and on school supply items worth up to $20 each, such as book bags, textbooks and notebooks.

Similar tax holidays were held in 2015 and 2016.

The state expects to lose $14.7 million in tax revenues from the three-day holiday while local government and transit authorities would miss out on a combined $4.2 million, according to the non-partisan Ohio Legislative Service Commission.

Ohio is among 18 states that offer back-to-school sales tax holidays. Retailers say the tax breaks help spur additional sales.

The sales tax rates range from 6.5 percent to 8 percent, depending on the county. In 51 of Ohio's 88 counties, the rate is 7.25 percent.

State Rep. Niraj Antani, R-Miamisburg, said the tax break will help families afford school supplies and clothing for their children. “This is an important tax cut to give some relief to these parents and families and I hope this sales tax holiday will become permanent very soon,” he said in a written statement.
