Out-of-state driver killed in I-70 crash identified

The identity of a man killed in a crash early Tuesday evening on westbound Interstate 70 has been released.

Benjium Perry, 41, of Lebanon, Miss., was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday.

Two semis and a Subaru crashed just on westbound I-70, just east of the I-75 interchange. Authorities said Perry was the driver of a semi that rear-ended another semi. Shipping paperwork suggests the driver was hauling cargo from the east, possibly the Springfield area, Nichols said.

The semi of the deceased was carrying a heavy load and it left skid marks on the highway, indicating an attempt to stop before striking the first semi, according to Nichols.

No one else was injured.

The crash happened during a traffic slow down at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The slow down was caused by a two-vehicle crash on westbound I-70 between the airport exit and I-75. No one was injured in that crash and it was cleared at approximately 6:45 p.m.
