One dead, one hurt in crash

A two-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon claimed the life of one person and sent another to the hospital.

The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. at the intersection of West North Street and North Western Avenue. Police said they expected North Street to be closed throughout Saturday night.

Springfield police arrived to find that one woman had been ejected from a Chrysler convertible and another person was trapped underneath a Land Rover. That person died at the scene, Sgt. Doug Pergram said.

Names of those involved were not available Saturday evening, but Pergram said the woman ejected from the car was alert when they arrived. She was taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center, but was expected to be transported to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, he said.

He was unsure whether the dead person was male or a female.

“It sounded like a bomb went off,” said Heather Roberts, who lives nearby on Western Avenue. “Everybody (left) their houses.”

Roberts said the Land Rover was on top of a woman who was unresponsive.

“Nobody could do anything to help them,” she said.

In her six years in the neighborhood, it isn’t the first time she’s heard or seen an accident.

“These intersections like this,” she said, “people fly through here.”

The accident remains under investigation.
