Ohio lawmakers work to dump driver late fees

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio legislators are working on ways to end $20 fines for drivers who missed new deadlines to renew their driver licenses and vehicle registrations.

An Ohio House bill sponsored by 38 mostly Republican lawmakers seeks to repeal the fees that took effect Oct. 1. House Democrats are working on another bill to end the fees, plus replace the projected $19 million a year they were expected to generate for Ohio Highway Patrol operations.

Through Dec. 31, the unpopular late fines raised $6.4 million.

The penalties apply to drivers more than seven days late on a renewal. They were part of a series of new and higher fees added to state transportation budget last year.

What's so bad about them? Well for one thing we are not required to renew our drivers licenses if we do not want to so how can we be "Late". The state has no right to force us to renew our optional licenses by a certain date. Same thing with plate renewal. If I do not want to renew my plates for one of my vehicles because I'm not driving it but then later decide to renew, why should I pay a "late" fee?

What's so bad about them? This is a very easy fine to avoid. You can register by mail months in advance, or in person in advance or up to a week late. No one likes to get fined, but this is an easy one to get out of.
