Certain teachers and administrators here will be trained to carry and use firearms as part of an initiative through the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

Local school boards will determine who among their staff will receive the training and be allowed to carry a firearm at their respective school, the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

The 16-hour training courses — 12 hours in the classroom and four hours at the firing range — will be paid for with revenue from concealed carry classes offered at the sheriff’s office.

The training will cover safety, storage and tactics for handling firearms, dealing with suspects and basic gunshot first aid.

State law allows local school boards to approve school staff members to carry firearms at work.

Public school leaders across the state began to consider the issue in the wake of the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 children and six adult staff members dead.
