DAYTON —

Promising leads indicate a convicted sex offender who is on the Texas 10 most wanted list is living in the Springfield area, but he remains on the loose and someone might be protecting him, according to an investigator with the U.S. Marshals Service.

A $3,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of Jimmy Ray McMillan, 42, a Dallas native who is wanted by the Texas Department of Public Safety for failing to register as a sex offender. McMillan was convicted in 1990 for sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl. Authorities said he failed to register with Texas safety officials after moving in June 2011.

Since this story aired on News Center 7 on Wednesday, William Taylor, of the U.S. Marshals Service, said tips that have been received from the public have helped to verify that McMillan is living in the Springfield area.

Taylor said he believes McMillan is preying on vulnerable women who have children. He said if someone is protecting him, that person’s safety is at risk and they could be charged for helping a fugitive.

McMillan is described as 5-feet-10 inches tall, about 155 pounds and a tattoo of the word “Tex” on his right arm and a tattoo of “V+V” on his left arm. He is know to have asthma and may have received medical treatment while in the Springfield area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Dayton office of the Marshals Service at (937) 225-2917.
