Teen struck, killed by train in Clark Co.

By Jessica Heffner

MAD RIVER TWP. —

A 17-year-old was killed Friday afternoon when he was struck by a train near the 2000 block of Enon Road.

Clark County Sheriff’s Lt. Dustin White said that deputies had identified the victim Friday evening, but were not releasing his name pending notification of next of kin.

White said there were no witnesses to the collision except for the train engineer and conductor. They told detectives that train was traveling westbound when they saw the man walking westbound in the middle of the tracks with his back to them.

“They signaled for him via their audio horn hoping that he would move from the tracks, but he didn’t,” White said. The victim was struck by the train from behind.

Deputies did not initially know if the man couldn’t hear the train or why he was on the tracks. There was an operational camera on the train and detectives said they will review the footage to see if it sheds any light on the incident.

The collision occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on the Norfolk Southern line approximately 500 yards from the Enon Beach Campground. The 56-car train was stopped and the Enon Road crossing was closed for several hours during the investigation Friday evening.

The crossing and roadway reopened at 7:30 p.m.
