WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE —
Some employees at Wright Patterson Air Force Base were asked to stay inside briefly Tuesday after receiving reports of an individual jogging, wearing military clothing and carrying what appeared to be a weapon.
All personnel responded according to their training and took immediate action to safeguard themselves, officials said. Base security forces conducted a search of the area and were unable to confirm the initial report.
All evidence points to an erroneous initial report. An all-clear announcement was issued at 12:38 p.m.
The first email that went to those on the base said, “Possible active shooter - not an exercise. The email stated that the man was spotted near Building 11A, was wearing a military style uniform and was carrying a shot gun. He ran on B Street toward Fifth Street and Loop.
The email warned employees not to leave their offices and to lock their doors.
Several other emails followed.
At 12:14 p.m., an email called the incident a “non-hostile threat.” An email sent at 12:28 p.m. said, “all clear.” At 12:30 p.m., an email said that personnel were free to continue normal business, including moving in and out of buildings and on and office base, but asked that employees remain vigilant.
At 12:35 p.m., reports indicate employees received a message from a pop-up window from AFMC Command Center that said there was no active threat and “no active shooter. I say again there has been no active shooter.”
