A Springfield woman whose dog she said was sickened last year after eating chicken jerky treats jumped for joy after learning Del Monte and Nestle Purina are voluntarily pulling some products off the market.
The products made in China were recalled this week after the New York State Department of Agriculture found possible contamination by an antibiotic that is illegal in the U.S.
“I’m surprised, but very happy,” said Holly McCutcheon of Springfield.
The news comes nearly a year after McCutcheon and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown demanded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration speed up an investigation into the pet food that some claim has sickened or caused thousands of dogs to die since 2007.
The FDA has never found a cause for the illnesses, but said Thursday it will continue to investigate the products.
“The FDA believes that the levels of these antibiotics seen in the New York State Department of Agriculture report are extremely low and are not expected to cause any health concerns,” said Tamara Ward, an FDA spokeswoman.
Still, Del Monte and Nestle Purina recalled the products after New York officials found trace amounts of the unapproved antibiotics in Del Monte’s Milo’s Kitchen products and Nestle Purina’s Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch treats.
Del Monte officials released a statement saying Milo’s Kitchen has a comprehensive testing program, but also said the company didn’t test for all of the specific antibiotics found by the New York State Department of Agriculture.
“Pet safety and consumer confidence in our products are our top priorities,” said Rob Leibowitz, general manager of Del Monte Pet Products. “While there is no known health risk, the presence of even trace amounts of these antibiotics does not meet our high quality standards.”
Brown hopes that the pet food industry continues to work with the FDA to identify contaminants so families no longer have to worry about the safety of treats they give their pets, according to a statement released from Brown’s office.
“He will also continue pressing FDA to step up its investigation of the importation of pet food — especially from China,” the statement says. “He believes FDA must continue to test and inspect these treats in order to find the contaminant and that Ohio’s families need to know that food and treats they purchase at local retailers are safe for their pets to consume.”
McCutcheon hopes consumer pressure continues to build to increase pet food safety.
“I no longer trust what I’m reading (on the packaging). I’m trying very hard to be more cognizant of what I’m allowing my pets to eat,” McCutcheon said
