Derrick E. Mayes, 43, of Dayton, was sentenced to life in prison for his convictions on 25 counts of sex offenses he committed between 1988 and 2008, said Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Friday afternoon. All of the victims were children.

Mayes was convicted of the following counts:

• 12 counts of Rape - victim under 13 years of age

• 8 counts of Gross Sexual Imposition - victim under 13 years of age

• 2 counts of Unlawful Sexual Conduct With A Minor

• 2 counts of Importuning

• 1 count of Dissemination of Material Harmful to a Juvenile

The county prosecutors office released a press release reviewing Mayes case:

In 2009, the police were notified about the defendant’s inappropriate behavior. They investigated the

claims and interviewed a number of victims, including former neighbors of the defendant and

stepchildren of the defendant. More victims were identified, as well as the extent and duration of his abuse. At the conclusion of the lengthy investigation, a total of ten victims were identified as having been sexually abused over a twenty year period of time.

Prosecutor Heck also said, “The number of victims and lengthy time period this defendant abused these child victims is outrageous. Our children need to be protected from predators such as this. The years he will spend locked up and behind bars will ensure he cannot harm any more children.”

Mayes was sentenced to life in the penitentiary and was designated a Tier III sex offender, meaning if he is ever released from prison, he will be required to register his address with the Sheriff every 90 days for the rest of his life.
