It was Marilyn Doogs’ 83rd birthday, but she never expected to find a box full of puppies on her doorstep Friday morning.

“I heard them barking and I looked out, and there were three little dogs running around in the snow,” she said.

The three young pups were apparently abandoned inside a red Budweiser box sometime overnight. Doogs discovered the dogs at 1:30 a.m. when she heard them making noise.

The abandoned puppies were just inside her fence line. Knowing the temperature was below freezing, the act heated Doogs temper.

“It just gets me how people can be so inhumane and can treat pups like that in the middle of the night, in the freezing weather,” she said.

Humane Society of Clark County Executive Director James Straley said his office responds to many complaints regarding abandoned pets.

“Seeing them left on a doorstep, we don’t get that a whole lot. But in a back alley somewhere, it happens more than we’d like to think about,” he said.

Doogs brought the puppies up on her porch, and gave them food and water. While she is a dog lover, she said the puppies are too much for her to handle and hopes the humane society can find someone willing to take them in.

“I was thinking about keeping them but I’m not able to,” she said. “I hope they get a good home.”

The puppies will be placed on a 72-hour hold before being placed for adoption, Straley said.
