Hundreds of people stood in lines for hours at the Clark County Democratic Party headquarters Tuesday afternoon, cheering and celebrating as they waited to get tickets to see President Barack Obama.
Obama will speak at Springfield High School on Friday afternoon. Supporters braved cold temperatures, rain and sleet hoping for a chance to snag one of the tickets to glimpse the president in Springfield for the first time.
Shane Ramey, 40, of Springfield stood in line for two hours in steady rain with his sons and said it was worth it.
“I can’t miss it. It’s historic,” Ramey said. “The president of the United States in Springfield for the first time. We’ve got to show him we support him.”
His 10-year-old son, Deiontae, agreed: “I want to be a part of history,” he said.
The Obama campaign event was originally scheduled late Thursday night, but was changed to Friday as a result of the superstorm that has wreaked havoc on the Northeast.
The storm has left millions without power and has caused at least 39 deaths, many of the victims killed by trees.
It has also led to several campaign event changes and has forced both Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to cancel some campaign stops.
Romney spoke before a crowd in Kettering on Tuesday in what became a hurricane relief event.
Clark County Republican Party Chair Lynda Smith said local leaders continue to try to get Romney to visit Springfield before Election Day.
Still, Sen. Rob Portman and Gov. John Kasich will join the Romney-Ryan Commit to Mitt Early Vote Express Tour Bus in the area at 11:15 a.m. today at the Clark County Republican headquarters.
Smith said she hopes the event will energize Republican supporters and volunteers.
“People really appreciated it. They’ve been working in that office since July. It’s nice to have them here to acknowledge their hard work,” Smith said.
Smith said those who plan to see Obama on Friday will likely hear the same “stale” ideas the president has had for the last four years.
She said she wants him to answer questions about the Benghazi attack in Libya.
Clark County Democratic Party Chair Ron Rhine said Obama will likely remind voters of his administration’s accomplishments, such as saving the auto industry and 850,000 jobs.
The OFA-OH office on Bechtle Ave. had handed out all 600 tickets just after 4 p.m. The Democratic headquarters in Champaign County had some tickets just after 4:30 p.m. and Clark County party office gave out 900 tickets by 4:30 p.m. and had 300 remaining, Rhine said, adding that Obama’s visit has energized supporters.
Louise Trollinger, 57, smiled after she got tickets for the event, saying she hopes Obama gets re-elected.
“I think he’s looking out for the best interest of the middle class,” Trollinger said.
Jennifer White, 54, and Nancy and Jim Garringer stood in the rain for more than two hours and at times shouted: “Fired up.”
White said she doesn’t trust Romney and says, “If he gets in office, I’m going to be scared to death.”
