A German Twp. man was arrested after allegedly making statements someone would die while referencing the Colorado movie theater shooting.
Ronald E. Spinks, 37, called 911 at 4:01 a.m. Wednesday and made statements to the dispatcher, including “someone will die today.”
The call, obtained by the Springfield News-Sun, is about 23 minutes long and included several statements about the Colorado theater shooting. The caller continually asked if “everyone is ok” in Colorado. He then made statements indicating he would “do it” and that he sympathized with the alleged shooter.
“I don’t think he went to a movie theater and killed a bunch of people. I think what he did was he went in there and made a political statement,” Spinks said on the 911 call.
The caller told the dispatcher “sure” when asked if he had been drinking, and deputies were dispatched to Spinks’ home in the 5300 block of Hominy Ridge Road.
Several sheriff’s office units were mobilized and surrounded the house for about an hour and a half before forcing entry and securing Spinks, said Sheriff Gene Kelly. He’s been charged with inducing panic and obstructing official business, first-degree misdemeanors, and misuse of the 911 system, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.
Twelve people — including Springfield native Matt McQuinn — were killed and 58 others were wounded Friday while attending a showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” at an Aurora, Colo. theater. Kelly said all law enforcement agencies are on “high alert” for copycats.
“He continued to make statements about Colorado, about weapons, about the incident, and if we come out he’s going to kill people,” Kelly said. “All of this has this has to be taken seriously.”
The sheriff’s office has increased patrols in the wake of the Colorado shooting, and Kelly said area theaters have requested more deputies to help work security. This has been the only such threat reported in Clark County to date.
After he was taken into custody, Spinks received a mental health evaluation. He was booked into the Clark County Jail Wednesday afternoon and will be arraigned in Clark County Municipal Court today, according to court records.
