SPRINGFIELD —

A Springfield man accused of stabbing his tenant to death with a sword has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Jason Waller, 36, is facing two counts of murder, a count of tampering with evidence and a count of carrying a concealed weapon. He’s accused of killing 26-year-old Donald Argabright on April 9 after an argument about rent payments.

According to Springfield police, Waller allegedly stabbed Argabright in the chest with what was described as a “mini sword” he kept in his boot. Waller fled to Tennessee but turned himself in to authorities there the next day.

A trial was set to begin in Clark County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday but was postponed after Waller’s attorney, Jon Paul Rion, filed a not guilty by reason of insanity plea with Judge Richard O’Neill. The case has been postponed until January, said Clark County Prosecutor D. Andrew Wilson.

Waller has no prior criminal history. His mother, Dorothy Weber, described him as a “good man” who served in the Air Force and received a degree from Sinclair Community College. Weber said her son carried the sword because he thought Argabright “could be dangerous.”

Waller is being held in the Clark County Jail on $500,000 bond.
