Hot Rods and Harleys event brings people downtown

Springfield —

For one day this weekend, four blocks of downtown Springfield will be transformed into a block party. The sixth annual Hot Rods and Harleys event will take place from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Jennifer Cubbage, marketing director for Mid-Ohio Harley-Davidson, said the event has a more laid-back feel than some other registered cruise-ins because drivers can come and go as they please throughout the day.

Classic cars and vintage motorcycles will be at the cruise-in, as well as newer models. All models are welcome to attend, Cubbage said.

Some roads will be closed for the event, beginning at noon. High Street will be closed from Center Street and Fountain Avenue through Limestone Street; Limestone Street will be closed from High Street to Main Street; Main Street will be closed from Fountain Avenue to Limestone Street and Fountain Avenue will be closed from Main Street to High Street.

Entry for cars coming to the cruise-in and for motorcycle parking will be from Center Street.

Cubbage said several local food vendors will be downtown for the day, and several informational booths will be set up.

Two bands will perform, one from 3 to 6 p.m. and another from 7 to 10 p.m. A DJ will also be on hand to provide entertainment during breaks, Cubbage said.

“It really just gets people downtown for a fun event,” she said.

Center City Association Executive Director Maureen Fagans said having events like Hot Rods and Harleys in the downtown is a great way to help the downtown economy.

“By attending, people are becoming aware of what is available and are more apt to come back and shop and patronize the downtown businesses,” Fagans said.

Fagans added that it is important for people who may not typically be in the downtown area to come and see the progress being made.

Cubbage said the event is like a “big block party” with the hopes of enjoying a nice day in a nice area.

“We want to familiarize the community with the motorcycle world and bring people into downtown Springfield to enjoy the beauty of the downtown historical district,” she said.
