The Community Beautification Committee is accepting entries for the 48th annual Home Beautification Contest and is seeking volunteer judges for the free program.
For nominations, send a letter addressed to CBC Contest, 76 East High Street, Springfield, Ohio 45502.
Steve and Pam Garrett, 542 Sparta Drive, and Chuck and Diane Hutchings, 1918 Westgate Road both received the 2012 CBC Home of the Year awards.
Both winning couples received a Home of the Year Award for top achievements in home beautification, a Home of the Week Award and numeral awards as previous participants, according to CBC Chairman Marianne L. Nave and Co-Chairman Theresa D. Mills. A CBC judging team chose the Home of the Year winners from among the 12 weekly winners.
The Business of the Year Award for dedicated and outstanding beautification efforts was presented to Ohio Valley Medical Center Administrator Steve Eisentrager. The winning location at 100 West Main Street is kept clean of litter and debris year round and has beautiful, well cared for plantings, according to CBC Judges.
Southgate Baptist Church, 2111 South Center, received an award for beautification and maintenance of its buildings and grounds.
Steve Hawkins, horticulturist with the National Trail Parks and Recreation District, received an award for his beautification efforts in the local parks, green spaces and assistance to the CBC.
Jean Lampe and Tim McGhee of 3G Graphic Solutions received an award for their tree planting efforts to offset their carbon footprint in the environment. They are responsible for planting thousands of pine tree seedlings in this project.
A Neighborhood Improvement Award was presented to Habitat for Humanity for home building and home renovation program in the community. The award was accepted by Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Matthew Wilson.
Horton Hobbs IV accepted an award for the Community Improvement Corporation and its beautification work at the National Road Commons park area in downtown Springfield. The park features the Madonna of the Trail statue, trellis bench and water feature, Westcott style urns and plantings.
In honor of the four bloom rating by the America In Bloom Judges in July, the CBC presented four Springfield In Full Bloom Awards to community participants. Those awards were presented to homeowner Helju Kusmu and businesses Littleton & Rue, the Cosmetic & Family Dentistry and the Springfield Post Office.
An Adopt-A-Bed Award was presented to the Champion City Volunteers for their improvements, planting and maintenance of the CBC Route 41 Adopt-A-Bed. The CCV includes Duane and Karen Sims, Dan and Shirley Campbell, Becky Plant and Ray Woeber.
The Neighborhood Sign Beautification Award, a traveling award for Council of Neighborhood Associations groups, was presented to College Hill Neighborhood President Robert Goodfellow. The sign is on North Fountain Avenue just north of the bridge.
Chairmen’s Awards for 30 years of volunteer beautification service to the City of Springfield went to CBC members George R. Hiller and David L. Williams. Both men were appointed to the CBC by the City Commission in 1982.
Co-Chairman Theresa D. Mills and Betty L. Jones received Chairman’s Awards for 10 years service, having been appointed by the City Commission in 2002.

Members of the 2012 Community Beautification Committee include Bernice Applin, Heather Hickle, George R. Hiller, Mary Hirst, Betty L. Jones, Tim McLean, David L. Williams, Co-Chairman Mills and Chairman Nave. Area businesses who work with CBC projects presented door prizes including Paul and Melody Snyder and Spring Run Farms, Bonnie’s Nursery and Garden Center, Cappelli’s Country Gardens, Netts Floral and McKinnons.
The CBC is a year-round committee appointed by the Springfield City Commission, and it meets every month on the first Thursday at 7:30 pm in the City Forum Conference Room of City Hall.
The CBC also is seeking additional volunteers to assist with the public area flower beds (CBC Adopt-A-Beds) throughout the city. These are located on various green spaces, boulevards, city streets and all on public property.
