Bikers raise money for family hit by fire

SPRINGFIELD —

A local motorcycle club will host a charity benefit to raise money for a South Charleston family who lost their home in a fire.

Springfield’s Iron Misfits Motorcycle Club is full of tough guys, as president Jason “Inkman” Byrd will say. But they also like to help those in need.

“Yeah, you look at us and you see us walking into a place, all tattooed bikers, but we’re here to help,” Byrd said.

Chad and Tara Sanders and their 15-month-old baby weren’t injured in the blaze that destroyed their home at 130 N. Chillicothe St. But they were left with nothing. Byrd said that’s why members have organized a benefit to raise money to help them with their living expenses and to replace what was lost.

The benefit will be held Saturday at the Iron Misfit’s home bar, Main Street Pub, 204 E. Main St., Springfield. Entry is $5 and the event will include food such as chili and spaghetti, as well as 50/50 raffles, and pool and corn hole tournaments. They will also accept baby clothes and toy donations.

“Everybody can come and get a full belly,” Byrd said.

All proceeds will go directly to the Sanders family. While Byrd said the family has insurance, it can take months to get items replaced. He wants them to feel at home now.

“People need help. It’s hard times these days, especially when you lose everything,” he said.
