Enon changes turn restriction near school

By Mark McGregor

ENON —

A left turn ban from Broadway Alley onto South Xenia Drive was lifted in favor of a no left turn for a portion of weekdays.

Council agreed Tuesday to allow left turns from Broadway when there isn’t likely likely be activity at the nearby Enon Elementary School.

It passed an amended version of the ordinance initially introduced in late October.

“The idea was: After school was done and people are done picking up and dropping off for the day, why can’t people make that left turn?,” Mayor Tim Howard said.

Left turns would be restricted until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Councilman Elmer Beard questioned whether it was necessary to keep the restriction until 6 p.m.

“I would think so just because of time Speedway (headquarters) lets out. They’re out at 5 o’clock,” Councilwoman Lorri Jenkins said.

“If we pass this and it becomes an ordinance and it needs to be changed, we can come back in and amend the hours to it,” Howard said.

The 30-day ordinance will take effect Dec. 27.

In other business, council cancelled its final regular meeting of the year on Dec. 25 but left open the possibility of a special meeting to discuss finances.

“With some of the things going on with our financial situation, it may become necessary that this council meet,” Councilman Stephen Trout said. Members did not discuss what financial situation Trout referred to.
