Detrick dismisses election complaint

By Tiffany Y. Latta

Days after winning a seat to remain a Clark County commissioner, John Detrick on Thursday voluntarily dismissed an election misconduct complaint against his former Democratic opponent.

Detrick filed a complaint with the Ohio Elections Commission on Nov. 2 against former Clark County Common Pleas Court Judge Douglas Geyer, alleging he made multiple slanderous statements about him in a political ad in the Springfield Paper as well as on Geyer’s campaign website. The ad later appeared in the Springfield News-Sun.

In the ad, Geyer says commissioners Detrick and Richard Lohnes gave away the county agriculture building without input or informing all members of commission or agricultural organizations affected when they voted 2-1 to support a lease agreement involving Konecranes. The crane maker leased the building to establish a global training facility that is expected to bring at least 25 jobs and thousands of visitors annually for training.

Detrick still contends the documents are false but dismissed the complaint because he was re-elected commissioner, according to documents filed with the elections commission.

“… The slanderous statements appear to have no impact on the substantive outcome of the election. Accordingly, Mr. Detrick desires to dismiss the matter in order to preserve the scarce resources of the Ohio Election Commission,” the documents said.

Detrick defeated Geyer 33,357 to 25,953, according to preliminary election results. He was first elected commissioner in 1997.
