Champaign voters reject several issues

URBANA —

Salem Twp. voters narrowly approved an additional 3-mill levy for fire and Emergency Medical Services Tuesday night, but similar levies did not fare well in other local townships, according to final, unofficial results.

Salem Twp. voters also rejected a proposed 2.9-mill additional levy to cover the cost of construction and resurfacing of the townships roads.

In Harrison Twp., voters rejected a replacement and increase of 2 mills for fire protection, as well as an additional 2 mills for the construction of a new township building. In Jackson Twp., voters rejected separate levies for EMS service and maintaining fire apparatus. In Union Twp., voters narrowly rejected a 4-mill replacement and increase for fire protection.

Townships throughout the county have faced rising EMS fees in recent years. In Union Twp., officials have said their EMS contract with the city of Urbana will rise from $36,000 in 2012 to $43,000 next year, and to $75,000 by 2015. In other cases, townships like Salem and Harrison in Champaign County faced higher fees due to the fact they have historically received service from West Liberty Emergency Medical Services. But that agency was changed to the Macochee Joint Ambulance District in an attempt to create a more professional, full-time service, and sought higher fees from the townships.

In other election news, according to final, unofficial results:

• Voters in Mechanicsburg rejected a new 3-mill levy for roads, but approved a 4-mill renewal levy for maintaining fire services.

• In St. Paris, voters soundly defeated a new 3-mill levy for drainage improvements.

• Voters in Christiansburg approved a 1-mill renewal levy for current expenses.

• Voters in North Lewisburg narrowly rejected an electric aggregation issue on the ballot.

• Voters in Goshen Twp. approved a 2-mill renewal levy for fire protection.

• An additional 0.5-mill levy for 911 services countywide was rejected.

• County residents rejected a ballot issue for electric aggregation in unincorporated areas of the county.

• The Northeast Champaign Fire District’s voters approved separate 4.5-mill and 1-mill replacement levies for EMS and fire services.
