The Graham Local School District finalized a $60,000 settlement agreement with a former teacher who won accolades for her work, but was also involved in several disciplinary incidents throughout her career.
Chantelle M. Rose, a former science teacher at Graham, agreed to a $60,000 settlement with the district. The district released a brief statement about the agreement.
“Mrs. Rose has resigned her employment with the board under the terms of the resolution in exchange for payment from the district and its insurer,” the statement says.
The Springfield News-Sun obtained a copy of the agreement after filing a public records request.
District Superintendent Norm Glismann declined to comment and Rose couldn’t be reached for comment Thursday.
Rose has participated in several educational programs through her work as a science teacher, including studying sea life in the Arctic. She also flew with the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, and trained in the Mojave Desert as part of a program that trained teachers for space flight.
She also has faced reprimands throughout her career at Graham and last year faced a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence in Champaign County Municipal Court. She was accused of biting a man she knew in the chest and making threats last June, but the charge was dismissed after she completed a court evaluation.
Court officials said the evaluation showed Rose was unlikely to commit a similar offense.
Last August Graham school board members voted to suspend Rose without pay while termination proceedings were pending. Rose demanded a hearing.
The recent settlement agreement shows both sides disputed whether just cause existed for the board to end her continuing teaching contract. As part of the settlement, Rose agreed to present a letter to the district resigning effective Aug. 10, 2012.
While she was a teacher at Graham, district administrators raised concerns that she had dressed inappropriately while on the job, according to information in her personnel file. Her personnel file also shows the district raised concerns that she was spending class time talking and texting on a cell phone and texting inappropriate vacation photos of herself to students.
